Social Bubbles in different societies- Anchi Hsin

About

Human rely on social connections to survive. However, not all kinds of connections can contribute to survival. Both of the scenarios—when humans only interact with others who are similar with them and when they are being surround by people who all aren’t similar to them, will bring human to the path of extinction. However, internet actually make us be in these scenarios easily. Internet algorithm brings us conveniences, but it also nudge us to be in comfort zones ( e.g. being feed with political news that reinforce our original beliefs), or suffer from isolated situations (e.g. being cyber bullying online) . As a result, people in nowadays need to be extra aware of who and how we interact with each other.

Adjacency Rules

  • If all the people around me are similar to me, I feel so comfortable that I lose a sense of alertness, and I die since I face an unknown danger (1> 6 lives> 0)

  • If all the people around me are different from me, I feel insecure, and I die due to isolation (1>6 lives>0)

  • If  only 1 person around me is similar to me, and the rest of the people aren’t, I feel slightly insecure but still feeling ok (1>1 remain the same)

  • If half of the people around me are similar to me, and half of the people aren’t, it’s the perfect balance because I feel secure but still have awareness at the same time (Produce cells 0>3 lives>1)

The size of the cells and the amount of cell at start indicates the population density of societies. Each videos represent different ways of living in different societies.

Firstly, The U.S. has low population density— more grids and less cells represent its relatively large amount of land but little amount of people.

The U.S.

Secondly, Japan has high population density— less grids and more cells represent its relatively small amount of land but large amount of people.

Lastly, Truku, a Taiwan indigenous tribe, has high population density— less grids and more cells represent its very small amount of land but large amount of people.
