THE PROCESSING PROJECT:CELLULAR AUTOMATA / ADJACENCY

BRIEF:

IN THIS EXERCISE WE USE CONWAY’S GAME OF LIFE TO EXPLORE THREE TOPIC AREAS:

  1. Balancing “outliers” and “conformers”

    • Modifying the grid size - Does your grid represent anything in your game of life Grid is a type of translation for me, It represents the initial pattern constitutes the seed of the system.

    • Consider the overall balance between live and dead cells. How does grid size and cell presence affect the game duration?

Any dead cell with exactly three live neighbours becomes a live cell, as if by reproduction. And live cells will always be more than dead cells.

It makes me think about what defination should we give for conformer and outliers, is outlier equal to actvist and conformers equal to someone who

    For example:   Reproduction: 0-----3 lives------1

                            Death: 1-------<2 lives or >3lives--------0

2. Adjacency Rules

Basketball Competition

  • If there is 1 player guard me during the game, there are not enough space for me to shoot, but I am still having the ball

  • If there are 2 or more players guard me, I stay alive

  • If there are 4 players guard me, there is too much defense pressure and I will lose the ball but still alive

  • If just the right amount of players are guard me, I can pass the ball and stay alive

3. Data as a design material

  • How do variable changes (opacity, cell size, color, etc.) affect or change our understanding of the information or experience? The size of cell changes will affect the overall perspectives.  From a detailed view to a broad view may change our perspective. In my point of view, the differences of color changes the sense of space in the canvas.
