The gallery title “Openness” indicates that both the curator and the artists’ goal of the exhibition is to create bonds between people, instead of merely showing individual's artistic expressions.

The main idea can be shown in Yvette Taminiau’s work and the curator’s decision of selecting it. Yvette uses Dutch’s newspaper as her canvas to draw illustrations that echoes its original content. Drawings on the newspaper not only is her way to communicate her ideas to the audience of the art show, but also to connect to the mass by responding to the social events and issues that are documented on the newspaper.

On the other hand, the curator’s decision of including Yvette’s work to the art show in America, also echoes the idea of creating interaction with each other by increasing inclusiveness and diversity--Amercian audience might not understand Dutch on the newspaper, but they can still learn to appreciate the work and its meaning because commonality can always be found regardless of border and culture.

I am resonated with Yvette’s work because I like her idea of responding social issues and events through artwork. We, as a society, are together, and we constantly inspire each other. To me, regardless of the legal aspect of copyright protection, I think every creation is spiritually owned and shared by everyone. Looking at her work is like reading previous readers’ hand-written annotation that is pencil marked on the pages of a second hand book. There are very sincere and personal, yet still can create resonance to the people who read it.

In her work, Percolator, on a newpaper page with text about abortion and a ultrasound image, she draws a water boiler. The water boiler’s shape not only symmetries the fan-shaped ultrasound image underneath, but also its black contour lines echoes the black-and-white color of the image. Most importantly, the water boiler represents the idea of “time”, which is the crucial element in the topic of abortion.
